I seem to write about this annually, or at least think about it.<\/p>\n
Every year, around this time of year, my group of cats become a little bit unsettled and there’s a tiny bit of tension that wasn’t there before. Mostly between the males.<\/p>\n
Why? As far as I can tell, it indicates an unknown (or at least to them) entire tom roaming the area.<\/p>\n
People talk about how neutering is about population control, but it isn’t solely that at all. Territory disputes between toms can turn terribly ugly; and are most definitely more likely to with hormones in the mix.<\/p>\n
The health benefits to neutering a tom cat are substantial, but another thing to take into account is the veterinary costs that can come about when fight injuries accrue as a result of turf wars. If your cat is coming home with a slight nick to his ear, it doesn’t mean the other cat got off so lightly…..<\/p>\n
A large number of cats in a built up area will always be a bit of a balancing act. But it’s made infinitely more stressful to both them and their human families if the chances of altercations are higher.<\/p>\n
