A lot of people don&#8217;t realise that cats were actively used to assist during these times, and I recently read this passage to honour them. I felt it should be shared:<br><br>Paws At The Ready &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cats of World War One had significant role in all the campaigns, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We must honour their bravery too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Give thought to all the kitties who served in World War One,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A battalion of the finest who never fired a gun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What was their role?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether hunting rodents out at sea, or loyal friends to men, these many cats had vital roles, time and time again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The food was saved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A common sight in trenches deep, dispatching mice and rats, the soldiers\u2019 had a special bond with many of these cats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many were treasured mascots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five hundred thousand cats were sent to serve in the Great War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some detected mustard gas, whilst others were offshore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the feline heroes -Togo was the Dreadnought\u2019s cat, The Swan had their lad, Ching. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pincher was the Vinex\u2019s mog, it was luck they hoped they\u2019d bring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Martinpuich\u2019 was aptly named, by The 9th battalion chaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pitouchi was the orphaned kit, who\u2019d survived on army scraps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spark Plug, Tabby, and many more were companions to the troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The feline unsung heroes, those cats who became recruits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ll never truly realise just what these cats went through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So spare a thought and give some thanks for what they did for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anon.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wearethemighty.com\/app\/uploads\/legacy\/assets.rbl.ms\/18902295\/origin.jpg\" alt=\"Why cats were the perfect companions in the trenches of WWI - We Are The  Mighty\"\/><figcaption><em>Image Source: Google Images<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the 11th of this month, it was Remembrance Day for all the fallen forces members who fought in the world wars.
