Cats are still muses…
Previously, I’ve written how cats have inspired creatives across multiple mediums over the years. This months blogs continue to show that’s very much the case.
A perfect example is the Netflix series, Love, Death & Robots. Fans will have noticed that each series features at least one episode with a feline star, and the most recent was no exception.
There were two episodes in this series, “The Other Large Thing” whose feline protagonist is a cat called Dingleberry Jones and “For He Can Creep” featuring Joffrey, a savvy cat who had a poet as his chosen human. While the first episode was entertaining the latter, to me, was more immersive. It had a feel of influences from a short story I’ve mentioned in a previous blog, “The Price.” It also conveyed interactions between feline characters a little reminiscent of “Tailchasers Song,” a book by Tad Williams.
The thing I noticed in both is that the feline heroes weren’t seemingly driven by emotional attachment to their human counterparts. It’s a common misrepresentation of the bond a cat is absolutely capable of building with the human caregiver. That said, while Dingleberry was driven entirely by his need for control, that wasn’t the case for Joffrey.
I’m not sure if the preconceived notion that cats are aloof and unloving will ever truly be left behind the more we learn about their psychology, but I hope so.
That aside, this series – and most definitely the episodes featuring feline stars – are absolutely worth a watch.
